Anyone who knows me well shouldn't be too surprised that I ended up with a page of these things eventually, but if you don't, well... feel free to be surprised, mildly disturbed, or some other adverse reaction.

Long ago, Zak ( *nnys-daughter ) exposed be to the comic The Call of Whatever ( tCoW - [link] ), and ever since then I'd been ever-so-slightly intrigued by the creatures portrayed. Back then I only knew them as some sort of Cthulhu-like beings, but recently my interest was re-sparked while pawing through some D&D books ( specifically, the Monster Manual, edition 3.5 ) and found what was listed as a "Mind Flayer". I'd heard of them, but the connection didn't quite click until just then. So I spent a day reading up on these creatures in the D&D universe, including the chapter on illithids in "Lords of Madness", which told me all I needed to know to make up my mind that I'd be trying my hand at drawing them soon enough.

But what had really sparked my interest was while talking to Roger ( ~FoxBandit ) and Zii ( ~Yaakova ) the idea of a "mind flayer bard" came up. And it was solidified when, in my research, I found out that illithids do, in fact have "performers" within their society. There we had it, bards. And I simply couldn't resist the mental picture of an illithid playing a xylophone with those amazingly dexterous tentacles.

However, this page is an adaptation into what I feel would be a bit more fitting as characters as mine ( hence four-fingered instead of three, as three-fingered things are a pet peeve of mine, etc. ). I could find no pictures depicting illithid feet, but drew them to what my understanding was to the written description that the "Lords of Madness" book offered.

Lots more experimentation with this race is needed for me to feel quite "comfortable" with them, but I'm liking what I have so far. :3

On YouTube someone talked about their Illithid Bard that played a Vuvuzela. It was apparently quite the terror.
